DSpOC Visits UD STEAM Day!

DSpOC Presents a demonstration of rocketry and radioactivity

This April, DSpOC was invited to attend Project Brainlight’s STEAM Day, an event focusing on the different fields of scientific research at the University of Delaware aimed at local Delaware middle school students.

We had our double-table spread of activities that allowed students to discover and explore the basics of rocket science. Students were able to make their paper rockets and observe the aerodynamics of their crafts. This table was led by Dr. Dwight Higgen and outreach associate Justin Stout. Students were then able to launch their rockets and learn firsthand about Newtown’s laws of motion.

DSpOC also held a demonstration of radioactivity by allowing students to take measurements of radioactive sources using Geiger counters. This activity was led by outreach associate TJ Tomaszewski. Students and teachers learned the basics the electromagnetic spectrum and got to explore the many projects that allow UD students to study radiation from space!
