Reaching for the Stars

DSU Observational Astronomy

This year, from May 2nd to May 7th, Dr. Matt Bobrowsky and Gary Swangin led a five-day field trip to Arizona for a group of students at Delaware State University. Their trip included visiting Kitt Peak National Observatory, Mt. Lemmon Observatory, and the Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium.

Numerous observatories viewed from atop Kitt Peak, at an altitude of 2000 meters (6800 feet) and located 55 miles southwest of Tucson.

During the trip, there were multiple nights where the group got to view incredible celestial objects using powerful telescopes. The students had the opportunity to observe planets, stars, star clusters, nebulae, and distant galaxies. Without a very powerful telescope, only a few galaxies can be seen in the night sky, and they’re often very faint and difficult to spot. So, the chance to see galaxies through a giant telescope was certainly an exciting experience!

When providing photos of the trip, Dr. Bobrowsky wrote, “It was an awe-inspiring experience for them.” And there’s no doubt that getting to see the cosmos in its full magnificence would leave anyone awestruck by the end.
